GEEST TAKES OVER CONTSHIP OVERLAND
Geest North Sea Line has acquired the business activities of intermodal operator Contship Overland from Contship Containerlines.
Contship Overland has provided intermodal transport of containers and European “swapbody” traffic between the United Kingdom and Italy, mostly by rail via the Channel Tunnel.
Geest said it has also acquired Contship’s former offices in Milan, Italy and in Dundonald, Scotland.
David Halliday, chief executive officer of Contship Containerlines, said the company wants to focus on its core business of deepsea container shipping, which did not include the former European intermodal arm Contship Overland.
Geest said it will switch most of the Contship Overland traffic from the Channel Tunnel to the Geest container shipping services via Rotterdam, but it will still offer the Channel Tunnel option.
