Maersk signs largest U.K. intermodal contract with Freightliner
Freightliner, the United Kingdom’s largest haulier of maritime containers, has signed a contract with Maersk Line to provide 353 round-trip wagon movements per day.
The five-year contract, which will run through 2011, consolidates two previous contracts between Freightliner, Maersk Sealand and P&O Nedlloyd, before the merger of the two carriers last year.
“This contract — a significant commitment on the part of both ourselves and Maersk — is comfortably the largest intermodal contract in the U.K. today,” said Peter Maybury, managing director of Freightliner Intermodal.
Under terms of the new agreement, wagons will be allocated across 50 of the 86 daily container services that Freightliner operate, and will connect the ports of Felixstowe, Southampton and Tilbury with eight separate inland destinations.
