Border Patrol sweep in Arizona arrests 143, including 95 truck drivers with CDLs in U.S. illegally

Border Patrol arrested 95 truck drivers with state-issued commercial driver’s licenses during a five-day Arizona operation. U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported the action involved the Yuma Sector along the U.S.-Mexico border. The agency arrested 143 people from 18 countries between Aug. 10 and Aug. 14. CBP described the 95 people as “illegal alien truck drivers” holding licenses from U.S. states.

CBP conducted the effort with local Stonegarden law-enforcement partners, according to its news release. Officials did not identify every participating agency or name individual arrest subjects. The release did not state whether every CDL holder drove a commercial vehicle at detention. It also did not identify employers, dispatched loads, tractors or trailers connected to the group.

California issued 76 licenses

California issued 76 of the CDL credentials, CBP reported. New York issued six more, while other states issued the remaining 13. The announcement did not name those jurisdictions or address license validity. CBP also did not state whether licensing authorities received cancellation requests.

During the same operation, agents stopped two human-smuggling events, CBP reported. They arrested four suspected smugglers and encountered 17 smuggled people. Agents also seized one firearm, 74 pounds of methamphetamine and 169 pounds of marijuana. CBP did not link those smuggling or narcotics cases to any CDL holder.

CBP cites public safety

“We are committed to protecting our citizens from all international threats,” Acting Chief Patrol Agent Dustin W. Caudle said in the release. CBP noted that federal transportation officials issued a final rule affecting some foreign CDL applicants. The agency stated that Border Patrol would work with federal partners to enforce the rule. CBP did not announce criminal charges, removal proceedings, administrative detentions or related court cases.

Why It Matters

CBP’s report places commercial driver licensing inside a broader border-enforcement operation. The release does not tie every arrest to a truck movement, freight shipment or carrier. But the results could prompt closer scrutiny of driver eligibility and state licensing practices across the industry.
