Borderlands Mexico: ANPACT warns tariffs threaten truck trade as exports surge

Retail sales, however, fell 9.9% year over year to 3,043 units in July.

The 16 members of ANPACT in Mexico are Freightliner, Kenworth, Navistar, Hino, International, DINA, MAN SE, Mercedes-Benz, Isuzu, Scania, Shacman Trucks, Foton, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Daimler Buses Mexico and Volkswagen Buses.

ANPACT said the strong July results extended gains in wholesale sales for both freight and passenger vehicle segments. Wholesale freight truck sales totaled 2,141 units, up 18.1%, while passenger vehicle sales increased 24% to 449 units.

Despite July’s strong showing, year-to-date results remain below 2025 levels in several key categories. Production totaled 85,551 units during the first seven months of 2026, down 6.1% from the same period a year earlier. 

Exports also declined 6.1% year over year to 71,377 units, while retail sales fell 20.1% to 19,115 units. Wholesale sales were the lone year-to-date growth category, rising 5.1% to 17,566 units.

The U.S. remained by far the largest export market for Mexican-built heavy-duty vehicles. Of the 71,377 trucks and buses exported through July, 65,983 units, or 92.4%, were shipped to the U.S. Canada accounted for 4.6% of exports, followed by Colombia at 1.9%.

ANPACT officials said maintaining certainty around the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement remains critical for the industry’s long-term growth. The association urged policymakers to preserve the trade pact’s core principles and argued that clear rules and investment certainty support manufacturing, supply chain integration and regional competitiveness.

The group also renewed its call for changes to Section 232 tariffs, saying the duties are harmful to economic activity on both sides of the border.

ANPACT further expressed concern about rising imports of used heavy-duty vehicles from the U.S. The organization said that for every 100 new heavy-duty vehicles sold in Mexico, roughly 53 used imported vehicles are also sold, creating competitive pressures for domestic manufacturers.

Freightliner remained Mexico’s largest heavy-duty vehicle producer during the first seven months of 2026 with 53,364 units assembled, followed by International with 22,414 units and Kenworth with 6,218 units. Freightliner also led exports with 51,089 units, ahead of International at 18,675 units

Stonepeak acquires rail-served logistics property in Fort Worth

Private equity firm Stonepeak has acquired an 860,100-square-foot rail-served logistics facility in Fort Worth, Texas, expanding its footprint in one of North America’s busiest freight hubs, according to a news release.

The property is located in the Alliance submarket of Dallas-Fort Worth, a major logistics corridor anchored by two Class I railroads, the BNSF Alliance intermodal terminal and Fort Worth Alliance Airport. The site also has direct access to Interstate 35, a key freight route connecting Mexico, the United States and Canada.

Phill Solomond, Stonepeak’s senior managing director and head of real estate, said transportation-linked properties serve as a vital connection between producers and consumers.

New York-based Stonepeak is a leading alternative investment firm specializing in infrastructure and real assets with approximately $93 billion of assets under management.

Green Tide Logistics launches Mexico-US maritime corridor 

Green Tide Logistics has launched a new maritime service linking the Port of Tuxpan in Veracruz, Mexico, with Port Canaveral, Florida, and the Port of Philadelphia.

The service aims to create an alternative to cross-border trucking for freight moving between Mexico and the United States.

The company said the service will operate on a biweekly schedule and could eventually expand its reach into Canada through connections with GT USA and inland transportation networks.

The new route adds Port Canaveral to Green Tide’s existing Philadelphia service and is designed to handle electronics, fresh produce, refrigerated cargo and other consumer goods moving in both directions between Mexico and the U.S.

According to company materials, cargo can reach Port Canaveral in about four days and Philadelphia in six days from Tuxpan, with plans to increase service frequency from biweekly to weekly during the second half of 2026.

Green Tide said the service’s intermodal connections to rail and trucking networks in Florida and Pennsylvania will provide access to additional U.S. and Canadian markets while helping shippers diversify transportation options beyond congested land-border crossings.

The route’s inaugural call was marked by the arrival of the M/V Whale Orca at Port Canaveral, where the vessel unloaded its first shipment of electronics and food products.

Why it matters: More than 92% of Mexico’s heavy-duty vehicle exports are shipped to the United States, making production trends, trade policy and tariff negotiations key indicators for North American trucking capacity, equipment availability and cross-border supply chains.
