Orient Overseas Container Line reported a 45.1% year-over-year increase in third-quarter liner revenue to $3.28 billion, as higher revenue per container and increased cargo volumes drove gains across all four of its reported trade regions.

OOCL handled 2.12 million twenty-foot equivalent units in the quarter ended Sept. 30, up 9% from a year earlier, according to an Oct. 9 operational update from parent Orient Overseas (International) Ltd., itself majority-owned by China’s Cosco Shipping Holdings. Average liner revenue per TEU increased 33.1%.

Cargo growth outpaced a 3.6% increase in loadable capacity. OOIL reported that the overall load factor increased 4.2% compared with the third quarter of 2025.

Trans-Pacific leads revenue growth

The trans-Pacific trade delivered the largest revenue increase among OOCL’s reported regions. Revenue rose 71.8% to $1.44 billion, while container volumes increased 13.1% to 595,139 TEUs. That compared with revenue of $837.9 million and volumes of 526,032 TEUs in the same quarter last year.

Asia-Europe recorded the fastest volume growth, with liftings rising 15.4% to 399,162 TEUs. Revenue on the trade increased 45% to $695.8 million.

Intra-Asia and Australasia remained OOCL’s largest region by container volume, handling 981,336 TEUs, up 4.6%. Revenue increased 23.7% to $947.6 million. Trans-Atlantic volumes rose 7.3% to 147,008 TEUs, while revenue increased 11.9% to $201.8 million.

Revenue growth exceeded volume growth in each region, consistent with the company’s reported increase in average revenue per TEU. The update did not identify the market conditions behind those gains.

Nine-month revenue approaches $8 billion

For the first nine months of 2026, OOCL’s liner revenue increased 18.9% to $7.96 billion from $6.70 billion a year earlier. Container volumes rose 6.5% to 6.25 million TEUs, while average liner revenue per TEU increased 11.6%.

Loadable capacity increased 4.8% over the nine-month period, and OOIL reported a 1.4% increase in the overall load factor. Trans-Pacific revenue rose 27% to $3.16 billion, while Asia-Europe revenue increased 19% to $1.70 billion. Intra-Asia and Australasia revenue grew 13.8% to $2.55 billion, and trans-Atlantic revenue edged up 2.2% to $556.3 million.

The operational update did not include earnings or expense figures.
