Matson settles whistleblower suit

Matson said it entered into a settlement agreement on July 17 with the federal government over a whistleblower lawsuit that claimed violations
of the federal False Claims Act because ocean freight fuel surcharges
were imposed on portions of military household good shipments that moved
in part by rail or truck.
In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, Matson noted it agreed to pay to the United States $9 million in full settlement of all claims in the litigation. Matson Navigation has also agreed to pay $950,000 to whistleblower Mario Rizzo for expenses, attorney’s fees and costs.
Matson previously disclosed the settlement in February in its 10-K annual report with the SEC for 2013.
