Fidelity Comtech has completed the installation of its Phocus Array 802.11 wireless radio frequency (RF) solution at the Port of Tacoma’s Washington United Terminals (WUT).
The system will improve Wi-Fi communications at WUT’s 103-acre terminal and intermodal yard located on the Blair Waterway.
WUT, a subsidiary of South Korean-based liner carrier Hyundai Merchant Marine, purchased the system that’s based on Fidelity’s patented smart antenna technology and designed to reduce problems and interference that older RF systems had when working in container terminals.
The system works with partial signals and still gives terminal employees reliable real-time information on the location and final destination of containers in the yard.
Joe Carey, Fidelity Comtech’s president, said his company was able to save WUT money and time because the Phocus Array technology needed one-fifth of the installations that some competitors require. He also noted the Phocus Arrays can be mounted on existing infrastructure like lightpoles.
