FreightCareers, hosted by FreightWaves, is the transportation and logistics industry’s free job board. On Freight.Careers recruiters and companies can post a freight position for free to reach candidates. Job seekers can search for hundreds of freight or logistics opportunities on the job board and apply directly to the company hiring.

FreightCareers helps companies and recruiters to find logistics talent nationwide, and helps those looking for a position to connect with prospective employers.

Why Freight Careers was started

FreightWaves established FreightCareers on December 10, 2019, in the wake of the shutdown of Celadon. The Celadon bankruptcy was among the largest in trucking history when it occurred. At that time, FreightWaves founder and CEO Craig Fuller stated, “FreightWaves has established a free job board for companies to post jobs and for employees looking for employment in the freight industry to post resumes. The tragedy of Celadon is impacting so many people across the industry. FreightWaves is driving transparency and connectedness in the freight community and we wanted to expand that to connect great talent with prospective employers.”

In FreightCareers’ first 24 hours the board had several hundred job postings from 225 employers. As Fuller said at the time, “Trucking and logistics employers – if you are looking for employees with tribal knowledge of freight, then FreightCareers is the place to post positions and look for applicants.” Unfortunately, hundreds of small, mid-sized and large transportation companies went out of business in 2019 and to-date in 2020.

Employment/unemployment news

According to preliminary data released by the U.S. Department of Labor on September 4 and reported by The Wall Street Journal, “U.S. employers added 1.4 million jobs in August and the unemployment rate fell to 8.4%, as the economy settled in for a slow recovery from the pandemic.”

The unemployment rate peaked at nearly 15% in April, and has been dropping since then. However, unemployment remains historically high. By contrast, the unemployment rate in February – just before the pandemic was 3.5% – a half-century low.

In a September 4, 2020 FreightWaves article written by John Kingston, the monthly employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) was decidedly upbeat for the transportation sector.

Transportation jobs rose by a solid 10,000 in August on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to BLS data. In addition there was a slight adjustment upward in the number of truck transportation jobs in July. The BLS reported seasonally adjusted truck transportation jobs in August totaled 1,449,500. That was up an even 10,000 from the July number of 1,439,500. Seasonally adjusted truck transportation jobs are now up roughly 17,000 from May.

There has been a shift in the workforce away from management and more to those on the road and on the loading docks. The warehousing and storage sector also has seen employment levels grow over where they were a year ago.
