FreightWaves’ own John Kingston has been named the winner of the prestigious 2020 Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah International Energy Award for Lifetime Achievement for the Advancement of International Energy Journalism.

Kingston is FreightWaves’ energy market expert.

The 7th annual Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah International Energy Awards celebrate the legacy of H.E. Al-Attiyah. The committee said the awards represent Al-Attiyah’s stewardship and leadership in the advancement of partnership, sustainability, development, transparency and cooperation in the global energy industry.

Al-Attiyah is the chairman of the Al-Attiyah Foundation and the former minister of Energy & Industry and deputy prime minister of Qatar.

An international selection committee votes on nominees for awards in seven categories: Qatar Energy Industry; GECF Award; Education for Future Energy Leaders; Producer-Consumer Dialogue; Renewable Energy; International Energy Journalism; and International Energy Policy & Diplomacy.

Kingston will be honored along with the other recipients on April 1 in Doha, Qatar.

“We are so happy that John is being recognized for his many accomplishments in the energy sector and congratulate him for his selection,” said Craig Fuller, founder and CEO of FreightWaves. “We knew when John joined us that his background would be an excellent fit for FreightWaves, but we couldn’t comprehend at the time how impactful his in-depth knowledge of the oil and energy sectors would prove to be for our audiences. We congratulate John and wish to thank the nominating committee for recognizing a wonderful example of the impact that journalists can have on global economies.”

The Lifetime Achievement honor recognizes individuals for their record of accomplishment in their sector and those who have made an “exceptional impact on the energy industry with distinct personal achievements for a consistent and prolonged period.”

The 2019 winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award was Diane Munro, editor-in-chief of Argus Media.

Kingston joined FreightWaves in February 2018 as executive editor before helping launch and co-host FreightWaves Radio on SiriusXM Road Dog Trucking. In November 2019, FreightWaves leveraged Kingston’s extensive energy background as the company’s first market expert in energy.

Prior to joining FreightWaves, Kingston worked for McGraw-Hill/S&P Global, with most of his time in the Platts division. He spent three years as director of Global Market Insights; almost five years as director of news for Platts’ real-time news services; and 10 years as director of oil, leading a global editorial staff of 80 in providing leading oil news content.

Kingston began his career at Platts in 1985 as a crude oil market reporter. During his time at Platts, he launched the Platts Data Brent assessment, the world’s leading benchmark for oil price assessment.

Kingston represented Platts on national television outlets such as CNBC, Fox Business and Canada’s BNN network and is a frequent presenter at conferences. Prior to joining Platts, he began his career with commodities-oriented media at American Metal Market. He also has worked for newspapers in New Jersey and Virginia. He is a graduate of Washington & Lee University.
