FreightWaves replaying FreightTech Venture Summit, LIVE @HOME

Free virtual conferences feature top industry speakers, technology demos and more

New York Times technology reporter Mike Isaac, right, talks with FreightWaves Founder and CEO Craig Fuller. Isaac was one of many guests that participated in FreightWaves’ virtual conferences last week. Both the FreightTech Venture Summit and LIVE @HOME events will be rebroadcast this week.

FreightWaves just completed its most recent LIVE @HOME annual event as well as a special venture capital summit. But we recognize that everyone is busy these days and doesn’t have the ability to sit and watch three days of content. Because of requests we received asking how to access all the great content from last week’s FreightTech Venture Summit and FreightWaves LIVE @HOME, FreightWaves will replay the two events again this week.

The three days of content will stream on live.freightwaves.com beginning Tuesday with the Venture Summit. LIVE @HOME will follow on Wednesday and Thursday. Complete agendas for all three days can be found below.

The two-day LIVE @HOME event featured several top speakers, including The New York Times technology reporter and author Mike Isaac. Isaac is the author of “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber.” He spoke with FreightWaves founder and CEO Craig Fuller on that and other topics.

Shelley Simpson, J.B. Hunt EVP and chief commercial officer and a frequent industry speaker, talked about the company’s technology evolution with J.B. Hunt President and CEO John Roberts III in a special keynote address.

“We started talking through modernization and that evolved — the conversation opened up into what else could we do if we had more bandwidth and flexibility and access and what would we be able to do for our customers and our people with more data,” Roberts said. “That began a very important conversation for us.”

The Day 1 replay of LIVE @HOME begins at 9 a.m. EST Wednesday. Day 2 follows on Thursday, also kicking off at 9 a.m. The stream for both days can be found at live.freightwaves.com.

LIVE @HOME also featured a conversation with Hyliion founder and CEO Thomas Healy. Healy then took live questions from attendees, answering everything from why the company was using renewable natural gas to power its electric batteries to why it was only building a powertrain and not a truck.

“If you look at the global shift toward electrification, the part that needs to be changed on the vehicle is the powertrain. You don’t need to change the whole chassis,” Healy said.

The headline sponsor for LIVE @HOME was J.B. Hunt 360 and title sponsor was TriumphPay. Universal sponsors included Platform Science, SkyBitz and Transflo. J. J. Keller & Associates was the global sponsor and Lean Staffing Solutions and Ryder System were national sponsors. Regional sponsors included AIT Worldwide Logistics, ArcBest, Front, Loadshop, McLeod Software, Redwood Logistics, Stratix and Truckstop.com.

LIVE @HOME also featured the naming of the FreightTech 25, honoring the most disruptive companies in the freight space in 2020, and 22 demos – rapid-fire, seven-minute technology demonstrations from some of the most well-known companies in the space as well as several up-and-coming firms with compelling here-and-now technologies.

FreightWaves debuted its new SONAR SCI product for shippers as well as Communities – a vertical-specific approach to insight and news designed specifically for those industries with specialized supply chain needs.

Other sessions during LIVE @HOME featured discussions on the impact of COVID-19 on the supply chain, less-than-truckload concerns, autonomous vehicles, urban logistics freight movement, the SPAC trend and insurance risk for new trucking companies.

FreightTech Venture Summit replay

The day before LIVE @HOME, FreightWaves produced a special virtual summit focused on venture capital (VC). The FreightTech Venture Summit kicked off with a keynote address from Steve Case, the co-founder of AOL and now chairman and CEO of Revolution, a Washington-based investment firm that backs entrepreneurs at every stage of their development.

The replay for the Venture Summit will begin at 9 a.m. EST on Tuesday.

“We’re just hoping to be a catalyst and shine a spotlight on cities that are rising, do what we can to drive more collaboration in those cities and create a culture around more risk taking and possibility in those cities,” Case said during his keynote discussion with Fuller.

The Venture Summit was designed specifically for those in the venture capital space and for companies that may be looking for insight on how to obtain funding. But there was plenty of content for companies at all stages of their life cycles.

Notable luminaries in the venture capital space dominated the one-day event, which was sponsored by Ryder System. Karen Jones, executive vice president, chief marketing officer and head of new product development for Ryder, delivered a keynote address, discussing the company’s new venture arm.

VCs speaking during the event included Jon Bradford, partner at Dynamo Ventures; David Dolan, who focuses on M&A and capital raises for transportation and supply chain and logistics companies as managing director of DC Advisory; Ben Weinberg, managing director of Susquehanna Growth; Kevin Diestel, managing director of Sapphire Ventures; Phil Yates, founding partner of Bregal Sagemount; Earnest Sweat, associate partner of Greatpoint Ventures; Kunal Mehat, principal with Hearst Ventures; Will O’Donnell, managing partner of Prologis Ventures; Jessica Robinson, co-founder and partner of Assembly Ventures; Ty Findley, managing partner of Ironspring Ventures; Zach Barasz, director of G2VP; Andrew Korn, partner at Sageview Capital; Julian Cournihan, general partner of Schematic Ventures; and Brit Fitzpatrick, executive director of Blue North.

There were also a series of Founders’ Journey sessions with company founders who shared some of the struggles and successes they’ve seen along the way.
