At the time that the United States braced themselves for President Donald J. Trump’s State of the Union Address, Chris Lytle was delivering his “State of the Port” speech at an event in Oakland’s Jack London Square, Logistics Management reports. “We’ve spent much of this decade working with business partners to build out the cargo delivery platform our customers want and in 2018 we’re putting it to work.”
Lytle cited the following milestones achieved in the Port of Oakland.
- Setting a new container record for 2017, tallying 2.42 million 20-foot containers handled for the year;
- The official opening for business of the refrigerated distribution center dubbed the Cool Port Oakland; and
- Expanding the TraPac marine terminal
Covering 283,000 square feet, the Cool Port Oakland will serve as the go-to center for perishables stored in the containers. It also has an estimated capacity of handling as many as 30,000 containers annually.
These accomplishments were presented by Lytle in his speech before his audience consisting of members and guests of the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA) and Women in Logistics.
The port is also constructing a new Seaport Logistics Complex. It is expected to open by 2019.
While other ports are still waiting for the Trump Administration’s fulfillment of promises made apart from the reported infrastructure plans, the Port of Oakland said it is strong enough for 2018 and hopes to break the 2017 container record.
