FreightWaves, the leading provider of freight market news, commentary, and analytics announces the appointment of Sam Tibbs as our Director of Data Science.

Sam Tibbs is a former finance professor who transitioned to the corporate world, most recently as a senior data scientist for a large expedited truckload carrier. Sam has his doctorate in Finance and CFA Charter along with extensive experience in econometric analysis and predictive modeling. His areas of expertise include transportation, financial markets, and oil & gas production.

“I met Sam nearly a year ago when he did a freelance study on the impact of North American fracking production on the freight markets for FreightWaves that we published. It provided one of the deepest studies on the impact of energy markets on truckload demand and demonstrated how important the oil and gas markets are to truckload demand. His background as a CFA, turned petro economist, turned transportation data scientist will be instrumental in helping our data science team to build market-based insights into the freight sector fundamentals,” Craig Fuller, CEO of FreightWaves stated.

In addition to having a data science and economics background, Sam used to teach college courses on derivatives and futures. As FreightWaves, DAT, and Nodal roll out freight futures contracts in the second half of 2018, Sam’s experience in educating folks on how futures works will be incredibly helpful to develop liquidity.

FreightWaves is building market-wide economic models using aggregated data sets to understand and analyze the health of the freight economy. To date, the company has partnered with accumulated data sets that represent hundreds of billions of dollars in freight transactions. The information is then modeled into aggregated indices that provide a near-time map of the market and be used to create actionable outcomes for participants.

The company is the new technology leader in freight. FreightWaves is the number one source to help participants navigate the freight markets through its news service and SaaS platform; the founding organization and sponsor behind BiTA (Blockchain in Transport Alliance), the transportation industry blockchain forum, think tank, and standards organization; and the creator of the world’s first freight futures contracts that help organizations with exposure to US trucking rates to hedge and trade their exposure.
