Several hundred trucks converged at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama to deliver trailers laden with supplies for FEMA ahead of the anticipated relief effort for Hurricane Dorian.

FreightWaves photographer Jim Allen spent the day at Maxwell on September 1, accompanied by an escort. His images show a small piece of the massive logistics effort ahead of the hurricane.

Access was highly restricted, and drivers left their trailers on the tarmac.

Maxwell offers a strategic location in the Southeast, but out of harm’s way –  more than 300 miles inland. The U.S. Navy is also staging helicopters at the base.
