HYUNDAI CONSIDERS 6,000-TEU VESSEL ORDERS

Hyundai Merchant Marine is considering ordering giant containerships
of 6,000-TEU capacity. "We are seriously studying the feasibility of building the
ships," a senior executive of Hyundai based in Seoul told American Shipper.
He said that the order, if confirmed, would be for five ships.
Hyundai is the latest carrier to say that it has plans to switch to the
new generation of big containerships.
Maersk Line, P&O Nedlloyd and NYK Line are the only carriers so far
to have taken delivery of ships of about 6,000-TEU capacity.
Other major carriers, such as COSCO, Evergreen, OOCL, Hanjin and
APL/NOL, currently have vessels of up to 5,000-TEU or 5,400-TEU capacity.
