Bridgeport losing TurbanaÆs banana business

Colombian banana exporter Uniban, which sells its products under the Turbana name, is planning to discontinue service to Bridgeport, Conn., next year.

Turbana’s port manager James Hass said the company was planning to leave the harbor next year, but could not confirm a report in the Connecticut Post that said the service would be relocated to Philadelphia.

Turbana, the fourth-largest U.S. importer of bananas, also imports fruit from Costa Rica. In addition to bananas, it sells plantains, pineapples, melons, pineapples and other sorts of exotic bananas.

Uniban also has services that call Freeport, Texas and Tampa, Fla.

Uniban’s subsidiary, Isabella Shipping, also offers southbound service to Colombia and Costa Rica. The company’s U.S. shipping agent is Interoceanica.
