Norfolk Southern earnings 47% higher
Norfolk Southern reported profit of $445 million for the third quarter of 2010, 47 percent more than the $303 million earned in the third-quarter 2009.
The railroad said third quarter railway operating revenues improved
19 percent to $2.5 billion, compared with the $2.1 billion in the third quarter of 2009. Traffic volume was up 15 percent.
General merchandise revenues were $1.3 billion, 16 percent higher compared with third-quarter 2009 results. Coal revenues increased 24 percent, to $709 million, compared with the same period last year.
Intermodal revenues were $464 million, 19 percent higher compared to the third quarter of 2009.
