Crowley adding intermodal equipment

Crowley Maritime Corp. said it is adding more than 3,600 units of intermodal chassis and containers to its equipment fleet for its Latin America, Caribbean, and Puerto Rico liner services.

The new equipment includes 1,400 53-foot containers, 1,400 53-foot chassis, 140 40-foot high-cube refrigerated containers, and 721 40-foot high-cube dry containers. Crowley said it has received the first shipment of containers and chassis in Jacksonville, where its Caribbean and Latin American operations are headquartered. Crowley said it expects to receive the rest of the deliveries over the next five months.

Crowley said the containers include hardware that allows for an additional bolt-type seal to lock the door to the doorframe, heavy-duty door plating and special round-headed huck bolts, which combine to make it more difficult to break into the containers.

'This is the third equipment order we have placed since 2003, and is further indication of our commitment to reinvest in the business,' said Tom Crowley Jr., chairman, president and CEO of Crowley Maritime Corporation.
