U.S. intermodal starts year with more traffic growth
Intermodal rail traffic carried by U.S. railroads started 2005 with more rapid growth during the week ended Jan. 8.
Intermodal traffic expanded 9 percent to 206,544 trailers and containers in the first week of this year, from the comparable week last year, the Association of American Railroads reported.
Carload freight during the same week totaled 320,541 cars, up 1 percent, with loadings up 5 percent in the East but down 1 percent in the western United States.
Railroads reporting to AAR account for 88 percent of U.S. carload freight and 95 percent of rail intermodal volume.
