JINDO INTRODUCES LIGHTER STEEL CONTAINERS
Jindo Corp., the South Korean container manufacturer, has introduced
steel containers that are about 18 percent lighter than normal containers.
The tare weight of a 20-foot container is 1,900 kilograms, compared to
the norm of 2,180 kilograms. A 40-foot box has a tare weight of 3,050 kilograms, compared
to 3,560 kilograms for normal steel containers.
Jindo that the light-weight boxes may enable shippers of heavier
commodities to use fewer containers for a given cargo tonnage and save on shipping costs.
Special high-strength steel and Scandinavian laminated spruce softwood
are used to manufacture the containers.
The new containers have had a full International Standards Organization
testing at Jindo’s Guangzhou factory in China.
