Opera house given by Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller opens in Copenhagen
Queen Margrethe of Denmark on Jan. 15 inaugurated a $442 million opera house in Copenhagen funded by Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller, senior partner of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, and the A.P. Moller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Moller Foundation.
The A.P. Moller-Maersk Group includes Maersk Sealand, a major container shipping and logistics company.
Mc-Kinney Moller said in 2000 he wanted to give an opera house to the Danish people and would build it on Holmen Island, a former naval base, in Copenhagen harbor. Danish architect Henning Larsen designed the 14-story facility, which includes an auditorium with three tiers of balconies and 1,400 seats. The opera house has views across the harbor of the Moller-Maersk Group's headquarters and Amalienborg Palace, home of the Danish royal family.
The first complete opera to be performed in the new house will be 'Aida' on Jan. 26.
