The railway company will begin road testing on its first publicly funded, emissions-friendly locomotives.
Norfolk Southern Railway Company has released its first publicly funded, emissions-friendly locomotives from for road testing.
The two GP33ECO switching locomotives, developed in the company’s Juniata locomotive shop in Altoona, Pa., were funded in part by the federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Improvement Program. According to a release from Norfolk Southern, the locomotives will be tested for service in the Altoona area before being permanently assigned to their respective grant award areas of Chicago and Atlanta.
Norfolk Southern operates approximately 20,000 route miles in 22 states and the District of Columbia, and is a major transporter of coal, automotive and industrial products.
