Major canned tuna brands issue recall

Tri-Union Seafoods, which sells Chicken of the Sea, and Bumble Bee estimate about 34,000 cases of canned tuna may be contaminated because of a production malfunction that resulted in meat not being properly cooked before being sent to stores.

Major tuna suppliers Tri-Union Seafoods, which sells Chicken of the Sea, and Bumble Bee last week recalled about 34,000 cases of canned tuna because the fish may have been undercooked due to an equipment malfunction.
There have been no reported illnesses to date connected to the affected products, but the improper sterilization could result in contamination by spoilage organisms or pathogens that could lead to life-threatening illness if consumed.
The recalls are related because Bumble Bee contracts with Tri-Union to co-pack the fish at a facility in Georgia.
The companies are working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to get the products returned from grocery stores and consumers are urged to throw out the product.
