MarAd extends VISA program

The U.S. Maritime Administration said it has extended the Voluntary Intermodal Sealift Agreement through Oct. 1, 2011.

VISA's purpose is to make intermodal shipping services/systems, including ships, ships' space, intermodal equipment and related management services, available to the Defense Department as required to support the emergency deployment and sustainment of U.S. military forces through a cooperative effort of the maritime industry and the departments of transportation, and defense.
