Great Lakes iron ore shipments tumble in January

A total of 2.16 million tons of iron ore were shipped on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence seaway in January, a 22 percent year-over-year decline.

   Shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway totaled 2.16 million tons in January, a 22 percent decline from January 2014, the Lakes Carriers’ Association said.
   Iron ore loadings at U.S. ports during the month tumbled 21 percent year-over-year to 1.95 million tons. On a bright note, iron ore shipments from Superior, Wis. and Two Harbors, Minn. rose compared to January 2014.
   A total of 204,521 tons of iron ore were shipped from Canada during the month, all of which came from Port Cartier, Quebec. Loadings from the Canadian port fell 31 percent year-over-year.
