Port of NY/NJ container volumes jump 8.4% in July

The North Atlantic port handled 576,947 TEUs in July 2017, an 8.4 percent increase from the same month a year ago, according to recent data from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ).

The Port of New York and New Jersey handled 291,760 TEUs of loaded imports and 112,694 TEUs of loaded exports in July.

   The Port of New York and New Jersey handled 576,947 TEUs in July 2017, an 8.4 percent increase from the same month a year ago, according to figures released by the port authority.
   Compared to July 2016:
     • Loaded imports rose 6 percent to 291,760 TEUs;
     • Loaded exports rose 3.2 percent to 112,694 TEUs; 
     • Empty imports rose 2.2 percent to 1,473 TEUs;
     • And empty exports rose 16.8 percent to 171,020 TEUs.
   For the first seven months of 2017, the port handled 3.81 million TEUs, up 6.5 percent from the corresponding 2016 period.
   As of June 8, 2017, ultra-large containerships carrying up to 18,000 TEUs have been authorized to sail beneath the Bayonne Bridge between New Jersey and Staten Island, allowing them to call at APM Terminals and Maher Terminals in Elizabeth, N.J.; the Port Newark Container Terminal in Newark, N.J.; and the GCT New York terminal on Staten Island.
