LNG vessels for Sakhalin II oil and gas project named
Two 143,000-cubic-meter Moss-type liquid natural gas carriers built for a joint venture between Japan’s NYK and Russian state-owned JSC Sovcomflot were christened Thursday at the Nagasaki shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

The two LNG vessels, Grand Elena and Grand Aniva, will be chartered out for a 20-year contract term (potentially rising to 30 years) to the Sakhalin Energy Investment Co. Ltd., a consortium comprising Gazprom, Shell, Mitsui & Co. Ltd., and Mitsubishi Corp. The ships will be used as part of the Sakhalin II Project to carry LNG shipments from Sakhalin Island, a far eastern Russian territory, to various ports in Japan, Korea, and to Baja California, Mexico.
