Crowley further invests in San Juan terminal

The Jacksonville, Fla.-based liner carrier awarded a $21 million construction contract to Del Valle Group, S.P. of Toa Baja, Puerto Rico to upgrade its Isla Grande Terminal in San Juan.

Crowley Puerto Services, Inc. awarded a $21 million construction contract to Del Valle Group, S.P. of Toa Baja, Puerto Rico to upgrade its Isla Grande Terminal in San Juan, Crowley said.
The contract includes expanding the terminal’s capacity for refrigerated container handling; paving 15 acres for container stacking; installing a new electrical substation to provide power for three new ship-to-shore gantry cranes; constructing a seven-lane terminal exit gate; and installing hardware required for a new operating software system.
The new contract is the third Crowley has awarded in association with its investment in the Isla Grande Terminal in preparation for next year’s arrival of the carrier’s first of the two new LNG-powered Commitment Class ships. The 2,400-TEU combination container and roll-on/roll-off ships, the El Coqui and Taino, are currently under construction in Pascagoula, Miss. and will serve trade between the United States and Puerto Rico.
In 2015, Crowley awarded a $48.5 million construction contract for a new pier and associated dredging at the Isla Grande Terminal after it reached an agreement with the Puerto Rico Ports Authority for a 30-year lease extension for the Isla Grande property. Expansion also includes the construction and installation of three new ship-to-shore-gantry cranes under a separate contract.
