The Port of Virginia handled 198,720 TEUs of containerized cargo in November, the second best month ever for the port.
Several carriers rerouted container cargo through Norfolk after Hurricane Sandy closed the Port of New York and New Jersey.
But the uptick in cargo in Virginia is part of a longer term upswing in cargo this year. In the first 11 months of the year, the port has handled 1,920,137 TEUs, 8.9 percent more than the 1,763,729 TEUs
handled during the same period last year.
Total rail containers handled in November were 37,478, a 40 percent increase from November 2011. – Chris Dupin
