Dominican container scanner nets record drug discovery
A container scanner at the Port of Caucedo in the Dominican Republic has led to a record drug seizure, according to a report in Dominican Today.
The report originally published on Wednesday said that on September 18 an x-ray scanner at the port detected what turned out to be 2,250 kilos of cocaine. The report said the container originated in Venezuela and was being transshipped to Belgium.
The container had been on the vessel Sierra Express, which is part of the Hapag Lloyd fleet. The vessel had stopped once in Puerto Rico before calling Caucedo, the report said.
The seizure was the largest since the National Drug Control Agency started using x-ray equipment at ports. During the last year, there have been eight major drug seizures at port in the Dominican Republic. Five were at Rio Haina and two were at Puerto Plata, in addition to the Caucedo seizure.
