SCFI slips on Shanghai-U.S. trades

Spot container rates from Shanghai to the U.S. East Coast and U.S. West Coast both declined since last Friday, according to the latest figures from the Shanghai Shipping Exchange’s Shanghai Containerized Freight Index.

   The Shanghai Shipping Exchange’s Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) fell 1.3 percent from last Friday’s reading of 838.36 to a reading of 827.27.
   The SCFI is an estimate of spot rates from Shanghai to 15 regions throughout the world, and is created by panelists from liner companies, and shippers and freight forwarders.
   On the Shanghai to Europe trade, rates rose 0.2 percent since last week, from $880 per TEU to $882 per TEU, while from Shanghai to the Mediterranean, rates inched up 0.1 percent, from $877 per TEU to $878 per TEU.
   However, rates from Shanghai to the U.S. West Coast declined 4.7 percent since last week, from $1,146 per FEU to $1,092 per FEU, while from Shanghai to the U.S. East Coast fell 3.3 percent, from $2,081 per FEU to $2,013 per FEU.
