Port Everglades drops customs inspection fee

Port Everglades drops customs inspection fee

The Broward County Board of Commissioners will eliminate a $115-per-container customs inspection fee at Port Everglades, Fla.

The container fee was charged to help offset costs associated with 9,000 square feet of warehouse space used by the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection in the port's foreign trade zone. The charge was assessed on ocean containers that were randomly selected for inspection.

Eliminating the fee was 'necessary to reduce costs for our shipping clients as well as improving our competitive position,' said Ken Krauter, port director.

The port estimates eliminating the fee will save port customers a combined cost of more than $100,000 a year.
