Kuehne + Nagel continues China expansion

Kuehne + Nagel has expanded its operations in China by adding two new logistics facilities in Shanghai, and increasing its number of locations in the country to 18.

The new Chinese facilities are located in Baoshan and the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone. They have a combined warehouse capacity of 8,800 square meters. A further expansion in operating capacity is planned by the company for 2005 when the second phase of construction of Baoshan Logistics Park will be finished.

The Baoshan facility is expected to support the logistics and inventory needs of shippers in the automotive, retail and high-tech sectors. The Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone facility will provide vendor managed inventory services.

“It is our strategic focus to expand the company’s network coverage and infrastructure in China to meet growing customer needs arising from this booming market,” said Andy Weber, managing director of Kuehne + Nagel (Asia Pacific) Management Ltd., in a statement.

As part of its development plan, Kuehne + Nagel’s operating subsidiary in Shanghai has moved to a new location with an office space of 2,600 square meters in early August. The company plans to open seven more branch offices over the next 18 months. Locations considered are Wuxi, Wuhan, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xian, Zhongzhan and Dongguan.
