Freight Alley is getting an infrastructure addition. In 2018, the Georgia Port Authority (GPA) will be opening its second inland port on 42 acres in Northwest Georgia’s Murray County. The project is a public-private partnership and will feature an on-site rail terminal to provide direct rail access to the Port of Savannah, which is the second busiest container port on the East Coast.
The State of Georgia, the GPA, Murray County, and CSX Transportation signed a Memorandum of Agreement for the project in July of 2015.
The new project is aimed at reducing Atlanta truckload traffic by 40,000 loads per year. The site is adjacent to U.S. 411 and features easy access to Interstate 75. The facility will handle import, export and domestic cargo.
The Appalachian Regional Port is projected to open in 2018 and will handle an annual capacity of 50,000 containers. A 10-year development plan will then aim to double that capacity.
The GPA’s first inland port is located in Cordele, GA, and has been extremely successful at handling cotton, peanuts, lumber and other agribusiness products for customers in Georgia, Alabama and Florida.
