AEI STOCK SURGES ON RUMORS
Although U.S. forwarder Air Express International reported flat third
quarter earnings on Monday, the company’s stock surged more than 10 percent in Nasdaq
trading to close above $29 per share on rumors that the company may be bought by Deutsche
Post Group subsidiary Danzas Corp.
News sources in Europe reported the supposed Danzas offer, saying the
acquisition price was in the area of $1 billion to $1.4 billion.
Sources at both company’s said the news reports were nothing more than rumor.
U.S. industry sources said Danzas made an offer for AEI over the weekend that
is being looked at by the company.
In a statement, Guenter Rohrmann, AEI president and chief executive
officer, said, "The company has had and continues to have discussions with third
parties concerning possible transactions. To date none of these
discussions has resulted in a definitive agreement. The company does not
intend to make any further comment on this situation unless a definitive
agreement is entered into."
