The United States imported 2.99 million net tons of steel in August, an 8.5 percent month-over-month decline, largely resulting from lower steel import volumes from Brazil and South Korea compared to July, according to the American Institute for International Steel (AIIS).
However, U.S. steel imports in August from Canada and Mexico were higher than in July, while imports from the European Union remained largely unchanged.
Compared to a year prior, U.S. steel import volumes in August slipped 0.9 percent.
During the month, U.S. steel imports from Canada totaled 499,000 net tons, down 1.7 percent from a year prior, followed by the European Union at 413,000 net tons (down 5.9 percent), Brazil at 339,000 net tons (down 34.3 percent), South Korea at 334,000 net tons (up 10.2 percent), and Mexico at 299,000 net tons (up 37.6 percent).
Overall, for the first eight months of the year, U.S. steel imports tumbled 21.6 percent from the corresponding period in 2015 to 21.96 million net tons.
