Alaska port gets TIGER grant

The U.S. Department of Transportation has given the go-ahead to begin modernization and expansion of the Auke Bay Loading Facility in Juneau, Alaska, after finalizing a $3.6 million TIGER Recovery Act grant.

The Auke Bay facility is owned and operated by the City and Borough of Juneau, and is designed to accommodate commercial users in the fisheries, freight hauling and marine vessel repair and support industries in northern Southeast Alaska.

DOT said the new loading facility would provide improved distribution services for the local fishing industry, and enhance the efficiency of small freight companies by offsetting the high cost of local operations.

It said the dock would support a rebounding wild salmon fish industry.

The modernization project, which is expected to begin in November and will take seven months to complete.
