Amazon plans to build a one million square-foot distribution center in Kannapolis, N.C.

E-commerce giant Amazon is planning to open a one million square foot distribution center outside of Charlotte, N.C., according to local media outlet the Charlotte Observer.
With a total price tag of $85 million, the facility will be built in Kannapolis and will employ 600 workers full-time, said city officials. According to the Charlotte Observer, the Kannapolis City council approved an incentive grant for the facility, spread out over three years, for a total of $562,275 or 85 percent of the personal property taxes paid by Amazon during that time.
Amazon agreed to bring a facility to Kannapolis through a joint partnership with Cabarrus County, Cabarrus County Economic Development Corp., and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT). The North Carolina DOT will assist with road improvements around the new facility as well, said the Charlotte Observer.
“We are very excited to welcome one of the nation’s largest companies to Kannapolis,” Mayor Darrell Hinnant. “Their role as a world leader in commerce continues to evolve, and we look forward to being a part of their innovation in the distribution of goods and services.”
