APM Terminals continues equipment investments at Algeciras and Apapa

The terminal operator ordered 16 new rubber-tire gantry cranes.

APM Terminals has ordered 16 rubber-tire gantry cranes (RTGs) as part of ongoing upgrades to the company’s terminals in Algeciras, Spain and Apapa, Nigeria.
The new 16-wheeled RTGs will be manufactured by Konecranes and will have a lifting capacity of 41 tons and allow containers to be stacked five high. Scheduled to be delivered within a year, twelve of the RTGs are destined for Algeciras and the other four are bound for Apapa.
In 2011, APM Terminals announced $135 million investment and expansion program for APM Terminals Apapa, which included the recently-finished upgrades to cranes and quay infrastructure that allow the facility to accommodate containerships of over 18,000 TEUs in capacity.
APM Terminals Algeciras is the largest container terminal in the Western Mediterranean market and the 28th busiest globally, according to a release from APM Terminals.
