ASIAN AIR CARGO TRAFFIC SOARS
Airports in the Asia-Pacific region had a sharp growth
in cargo volumes handled in May, according to statistics published by Geneva-based
Airports Council International.
Asia-Pacific airports reported a cargo traffic increase of 12.7 percent
in May, to 1.23 million metric tons, the fastest growth rate of any region.
Strong figures were reported by the major Asian airports of Hong Kong (up 11.1 percent),
Tokyo-Narita (up 12.9 percent), Seoul (up 16.2 percent), Singapore (up 13.4 percent),
Bangkok (up 19.5 percent), Osaka (up 9.5 percent) and Shanghai (up 38.4 percent).
North America airports handled 2.26 million tons in May, an increase of
2.8 percent. European airports reported a combined volume of 833,362 tons, up 1.8 percent.
World airport cargo traffic was 4.69 million tons, up 4.4 percent.
