Barge company joins EPA’s SmartWay program

Ingram Barge Company said it has begun participating in the new barge freight component of the SmartWay Transport Partnership, a public-private partnership between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and freight carriers and shippers that aims to reduce pollution.
Ingram noted that it has been working with the EPA since 2010 to develop the program for barge shippers.
The decade-old SmartWay currently has 3,000 trucking companies, railroads, logistics companies and shippers that participate in the program.
EPA said that over the past 10 years, SmartWay has helped eliminate 51.6 million metric tons of carbon pollution, resulting in savings of more than 120 million barrels of oil, and $16.8 billion in fuel costs.
