BNSF opens Kansas intermodal facility

BNSF Railway has unveiled a 433-acre intermodal facility at the Logistics Park Kansas City.
The facility has six tracks spanning 8,000 feet each; 4,300 container-stacking spots; and five gantry cranes. Officials peg the initial lift capacity for the facility at 50,000 truck containers; down the road, expansions could grow this capacity to 1.5 million containers.
Once fully developed, officials expect the facility to generate work for 13,000 Kansans.
“BNSF greatly appreciates the support of all of the government and business leaders who worked with us to make this day possible,” Matthew Rose, the railroad’s chairman and chief executive officer, said during the grand opening. “That support is an important part of the reason why Kansas City has developed into one of the most strategic transportation hubs in the nation. BNSF’s significant investment in this new facility will not only make this one of the most efficient intermodal facilities in the country, it will also help enhance the Kansas City region’s position in the global supply chain by offering shippers more capacity and service options.”
