British Midland Airways to start Heathrow/Jeddah flights

British Midland Airways (bmi) said it will start April 23 a three times weekly service to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia from Heathrow.

In September, bmi launched a thrice-weekly service between Heathrow to the Saudi Arabia capital Riyadh. “We have been extremely encouraged by the start that we have had on the Heathrow to Riyadh route. The opportunity exists for us to again re-establish direct air links with one of the Middle East’s key destinations. Jeddah is a major center of trade and industry,” said Nigel Turner, bmi’s chief executive officer.

The airline also said that from March 26 it will commence a daily service to Doha in Qatar under a wet lease agreement with Qatar Airways, and from April 22 will increase to daily its existing service between Heathrow and Mumbai in India.

“As deregulation continues to deliver much needed competition, our strategy remains to initially focus on the development of Mumbai ahead of any additional destinations we may consider launching in the future,” Turner said.
