Butcher, Kuo receive Connie Awards

   James E. Butcher, chairman of H'egh Autoliners Inc., and Capt. Shiuan-Yu Kuo, Evergreen's vice group chairman will receive Containerization & Intermodal Institute’s 2009 Connie Awards today at a luncheon in Newark, N.J.

   Butcher has worked for H'egh since 1973 when the Oslo, Norway, roll-on/roll-off carrier opened its U.S. subsidiary. He was named president in 1999 and chairman in April 2009. He also serves as chairman the H'egh’s U.S. flag ro/ro company, Alliance Navigation LLC, and Port Dolphin Energy, which is developing an LNG terminal off Tampa Bay.

   Kuo joined Evergreen in September 1970 and served aboard several of the company's vessels before coming ashore in 1974. He was instrumental in establishing Evergreen's initial full container service between the Far East and North America and has served as both president and chairman of Evergreen America Corp. He later became chairman of Evergreen Marine Corp. (Taiwan) Ltd. and vice group chairman of the Evergreen Group in June 2002. He returned to the United States in 2004, where he has responsibilities for activities in the Americas, from the company's U.S. headquarters in Jersey City, N.J.

   In addition to the Connie awards, CII presented a record 10 scholarships to maritime academy cadets and students at Rutgers University’s supply chain management program.
