An unusual pest was found at the Port of Miami, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations agriculture specialists at the Port of Miami found a first-in-nation pest inside a container of ginger from Ecuador.
The Department of Agriculture confirmed this week it was a Lissomus sp., which is part of the family Elateridae. Insects that are a part of this family are known for their clicking noise that scares off predators.
Some larvae from the family Elateridae can harm agriculture by feeding off of plant roots and decaying vegetation.
