Chilean ports gird against brown moth infestation

Agriculture officers are holding up vessel releases in Chile until full inspections for the moths can be completed outside the South American countries’ ports, according to Inchcape Shipping Services.

The Chilean Agriculture Service is warning of potential delays for vessels arriving in Chile from Ecuador to inspect for brown moths, according to a client alert from Inchcape Shipping Services.
The pest has recently been detected in Chilean ports.
All ships that have called in Ecuador will be inspected and if moths are detected will be prevented from offloading cargo until fumigation is completed. Following treatment, another inspection will be conducted to check that all moth eggs have been removed from the vessel deck. If pests are found later, cargo operations will be stopped, and cargo will be fumigated before offloading can resume.
