CN PLANS NEGOTIATIONS WITH UNION TO AVERT NOV. 7 STRIKE
Canadian National railway said it will negotiate through federal mediators with the Canadian Auto Workers Saturday and Sunday to try to avert a strike.
The auto workers union said it would strike the railroad on March 7 if negotiators fail to produce a settlement.
To date, CN has secured agreements with the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees and the Canadian National Railway Policy. It has also reached a tentative agreement with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
CN is seeking a three-year agreement with the auto workers union to replace an agreement that expired on Dec. 31. The union represents about 5,000 active CN employees in Canada.
If a strike occurs, CN said it plans to continue operations with management personnel performing shopcraft, clerical and intermodal jobs.
