Colography shows some moving away from just-in-time

The Colography Group has identified a shift in logistics strategy that may bode ill for air cargo growth in the United States.

The Atlanta-based consulting group last week said businesses increasingly are storing buffer stocks in regional warehouses and shifting more transportation to lower-cost surface truck and rail transportation rather than air as a way to minimize supply disruptions.

The group projects U.S. air export tonnage to remain well below the 2000 peak of 6.6 billon pounds, even though the total export market is projected to increase. U.S. air import tonnage is projected to grow in line with total import tonnage of in the future.
