Con-way Freight upgrades fleet

The less-than-truckload carrier announced it will take delivery of 875 new tractors to replace older units and will add 1,750 new trailers to its fleet this year.

   Con-way Freight, subsidiary of Con-way Inc., will take delivery of 875 new Daimler Freightliner tractors this year to replace older units and will add 1,750 new trailers, built by sister company Con-way Manufacturing, to its fleet in 2015.
   450 of the tractors will be the Freightliner’s Class 8 Cascadia model and the additional 425 tractors will be the Freightliner M2 model, a Class 7 tractor. The Class 8 Cascadia model will be used in line-haul operations while the latter model will be deployed primarily in city pickup and delivery service, Con-way Inc. said.
   Both the tractors and trailers have advanced aerodynamics packages for better fuel efficiency.
   In addition, the tractors are equipped with the company’s Drive Safe Systems technology designed to improve awareness and safety. The technology consists of a lane departure warning, rollover stability control systems, collision avoidance technologies, Lytx, Inc.’s DriveCam windshield-mounted, two-way event recorder system and Vnomics Corp.’s electronic on-board performance management technology to monitor vehicle performance and assist drivers develop the best practices to improve fuel efficiency.
   Based in Ann Arbor, Mich., Con-way Freight currently operates 8,750 tractors with 20,000 28-foot trailers and 6,000 longer-wheelbase city trailers.
