COSCO PRESIDENT MEETS FMC CHAIRMAN AND GENERAL HAIG
Wei Jiafu, president of the China Ocean Shipping Co. group, has met Harold
Creel, chairman of the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission, during a visit to Washington.
"President Wei briefed him on COSCO’s operation ideology, the
relationship between COSCO Group and American investors, the development process of COSCO
Group, and the role COSCO Group played in Sino-American trade relations," a spokesman
for COSCO said.
The COSCO president also met senior officials of the U.S. Maritime
Administration.
In addition, COSCO reported that Wei visited General Alexander Haig, the
former U.S. Secretary of State who is now on the board of advisers of the COSCO group.
The Sino-American meetings happened as maritime tensions between China and
the U.S. are running high. In June, the FMC decided to get prepared to impose sanctions
against Chinese maritime-related companies to retaliate against China’s unfair practises
against non-Chinese carriers.
