COSCO’s U.S.-BOUND CONTAINER TRAFFIC RISES 72%

   China Ocean Shipping Co. reported that its containerized traffic to the
U.S. soared by 71.5 percent last year, to 457,100 TEUs.
   U.S.-bound traffic in 1997 was 266,500 TEUs.
   COSCO’s rise in carryings in U.S. liner trades follows the introduction
in 1997 and 1998 of five new 5,446-TEU vessels in the transpacific trade
and five new 3,400-TEU ships on the Asia/Suez/U.S. East Coast route.
   COSCO said that it is now ranks as the sixth largest containership
operator in the U.S. import and export trades, up from eighth in 1997.
